Holocaust Education

Today we remember; 69 years ago the liberating of Auschwitz Concentration Camp. May the innocent souls that died brutality be bound for eternity… Amen.

“Unless the Holocaust is contextualized, it will give a distorted image of the history of the Jewish people,” (Haaretz, 2013).

In today’s society, we leave character footprints as we walk our paths. Sometimes our footprints cross the line and insult diversity, and cause more damage.  In order to create change we as a society needs to educate each other and share our footprints with each other without anger, rage, and bullying.

My background, I am a daughter of Holocaust Survivors, and Holocaust Education is a must for schools in the United States. My mother Fanny Starr, and my late father Zesa Starr, pioneered the Holocaust Lectures that became the model for Holocaust Education they started in the late 1960’s. They started with churches, civic groups, and later expanded the lectures with the late General Felix Sparks he liberated Dachau. Facts.

The few survivors who talk about the Holocaust, Anti-Semitism, want to face the Holocaust deniers. We are living historical proof that the Holocaust did happen (Fanny).

Society has faltered in tolerance out of anger; anger is a trigger that causes hatred, and trickles down in society.  I too have faltered in tolerance out of anger.

The New Anti-Semitism; January 27, 2014

What else can we call it when Israel is routinely targeted at the United Nations? And when Israel remains the only country to be the subject of a permanent agenda item at the regular sessions of its Human Rights Council?" Harper was perfectly clear what we should call it -- "the face of the new anti-Semitism." Also: "nothing short of sickening (McCullough, 2014).

History repeats, and people are blind because they do not know Holocaust Education. I ask the United States Department of Education to make Holocaust Education mandatory in all the U.S. schools. The only U.S. states that have mandatory Holocaust Ed are CA, FL, IL, NJ, and NY. Pennsylvania, Survivors and their advocates went to the state capitol and demanded that WWII and Holocaust Education be taught in their schools. PA legislation is considering a measure to allow mandatory classes on WWII and Holocaust Ed in the schools. However, their opposition is coming from the teachers union.

Spain’s parliament this past September passed a measure to make Holocaust Education mandatory. The way to change and fight Anti-Semitism is through Holocaust Education, listening, and sharing with each other.

The world is hot with hatred and it takes one person to make a difference.
