Dreidel

She Dreidel

Dreidel is played during Chanukah or Hanukkah; the holiday begins on the 25th of Kislev in the Hebrew calendar.  Chanukah lasts eight days and is a story of Victory, and how the Maccabees defeated the Syrian’s - Greek’s to reclaim the temple in Jerusalem.

Judah Maccabee and his brothers went to the temple in Jerusalem after the fight and cleaned the temple. They discovered the oil used to light the menorah was destroyed, polluted, and unusable. Looking harder the brothers stumbled upon a small amount of oil to last a day. The miracle, the oil lasted eight days, long enough to make oil for the menorah. The story is about Strength (light), over darkness.  There is power from the candles that stay lit for an hour or so.

Dreidel Game Rules:

Get a Dreidel or make one like Zydac’s on a 3D printer.
In a Jewish, home the game Dreidel is taught from age 3 on because of the complexity of understanding the Hebrew, English alphabet and rules. Dreidel is a game you learn as you go.  I’ve heard through the grapevine that people rig Dreidel’s to land on the magic letter of “G” of Gimmel.  Alphabet and meaning is in Hebrew, English and Yiddish.  I grew-up in a home that Yiddish was spoken the language, and I still speak Yiddish.

Age group 3 – adults:

Recommendations for kids use pretzels, chocolate coins, and or m & m’s and other coin like edibles for kids. Adults may use quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies. House Rules are honored same as Vegas house rules:

Welcome to the Starr’s House Rules played in Yiddish, have fun.

Adult Ante: $0.41 cents per person
Kids Ante: a smile and whatever food you can get them to add and a kiss on the kop (head).

Spin:

Nun = gornisht = nothing

Gimmel = gantz = the whole pot

Hay ה = halb = half the pot

Shin ש = pay = ante in $0.41 cent

Happy Chanukah from our home to your home, and May your Miracles come true.

The Season of Lights

3rd Avenue at 2:00 AM

The “Season of Lights” is a phrase used to describe the month of December. The light frenzy takes off the day after Thanksgiving, and continues through the first week of January.  The phrase even pleases the Atheist because it is neutral and does not cross the boundary of “religion.” The phrase “Season of Lights” reflects how our Christian friends decorate their homes with beautiful bright twinkling lights.

I am Jewish and I celebrate the miracle that happened when “light conquered darkness” and became Chanukah or Hanukkah.  The holiday is not a religious holiday, but a holiday about perseverance and believing in yourself and the miracles we have inside of us. I believe, do you?

No matter how you celebrate the season, taste the flavors of the season and try something different without political conviction, and have fun.

I wish you all, a Happy Chanukah, a Merry Christmas, a Merry Kwanzaa, and a Happy Winter Solstice.

Mark Twain

I passed through a bookstore and saw a magnet with a quote by Mark Twain. The magnet sits on my desk with only three other quotes; the referent is similar in two of them about exploring, dreaming and discovering. Throw caution to the wind, your dreams are in front of you, let go of doubt.

“Twenty years from you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”  Mark Twain

Occupy Denver

1450 Broadway

Occupying Denver

My mother and I put together a Mitzvah Package for Occupy Denver, and it involved teamwork. One part was her making fresh hot chicken that came from her heart.  The other part I delivered the packages to Civic Center Park, downtown Denver, CO.  When I got out of the car a couple of polite young men came to the car to help take the donations.  I explained, “I am a daughter of Holocaust Survivors, and my mom, and me support the movement.”

Once I said, “I am a daughter of Holocaust Survivors”, a young man started sharing some ideologies from Torah. He shared that he’s Rastafarian, and the Rastafarian Movement reads Torah, and believes in the Old Testament and Twelve Tribes of Israel.  He shares his beliefs with others and helps support the Occupy Denver Movement.  He said these words to me as I parted “Go forward and prosper” funny Spock always said that same phrase in every Star Trek, oddly enough, that’s the Torah portion reading for this week, Lech Lecha.

Pay attention Christian Evangelicals, Republicans, and the Republicans in Congress, and the Senate, the 99% people do not like you. The 99% people do not like the Koch Brothers or Wall Street Bankers.  The tax breaks you guys get are disgusting, lopsided, and Bushes tax cuts destroyed America.

The people of Occupy Denver, they do not like Michael Moore, they think he’s a 1% opportunist. He came to Denver to promote his new book and paid a visit to Occupy Denver. Back tracking, he took a break from “book signing” during his visit at Occupy Denver. During his 20-minute speech, he was confronted by a news reporter from CBS 4 Denver.  That question, put Michael Moore on the defensive, as he left for The Tattered Cover Bookstore for a book promotional book signing w/ press, and live broadcast with the Rachel Maddow show.

The young man explained that today was cleaning and moving day and those sleeping bags that were wet went to the laundry mat. The moving was in honor of the Veterans Day Parade. The Occupy Denver set-up a mailbox for mail, a clothing station, and they share with homeless and others in need, that’s kindness amazing.  Perfect strangers came together with the same compassions for a cause and are caring for one another. Incase you want to send a postcard or donations the mailbox address is 1450 Broadway.

The message is loud and clear; stop the 1% from destroying 99% of the American Dream…

Chili Con Carne

Abstract
The original recipe is from the Joy of Cooking, and the first time I modified it was in 1997.  I initially modified and made the Chili Con Carne for Chef Morris Starr, my brother.  The Chef was trying to teach me too cook, and I won a Halloween chili cook off with another altered version of the books recipe.  In 1997, I used ground beef from a butcher, compared to the beef I use now.  I use organic ground beef 95% lean and organic ground turkey white meat.  My brother passed away two years ago on November 6, 2009, so, it is with great honor I share the recipe for Chef Moe's Chili Con Carne.

Chef Moe’s Chili Con Carne

Number of Servings:
         6

Ingredients:

1 ½ pounds of ground white turkey or 95% lean ground beef or a combination of both
3 tablespoons of canola oil to coat the pan
1 cup of chopped white onions
1 garlic clove chopped
3 cups of unsalted kidney beans
1 can plus of unsalted whole tomatoes add more if needed
Add chili powder to taste
A dash of cayenne pepper powder
Justin Wilson chef used to say Cay-enne Whew-wee
1 bay leaf
Add a dash of red wine
Dash of sugar
Add 2 cups of water and gauge your liquid.
Dash of salt
Pepper to taste

Prep Instructions:

Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat; add the oil, add meat, stir meat, then add the onions, salt, garlic, stirring often.

Cooking:

In a stockpot add in the meat, onions, garlic, and renderings, and stir. Then add in bay leaf, tomatoes and its juice, wine, sugar, and water. Bring liquid to a simmering boil, then lower heat, and add in kidney beans, salt, chili powder and cayenne, add salt and pepper to taste. Why add kidney beans last, they’re usually precooked. I let it sit and cool then place in the refrigerator all day, and then serve at night or the next day.

Serve:

Serve with oyster crackers or a grilled cheese sandwich.  Cut extra onions and good shredded cheddar cheese to sprinkle on top and melt in the cheese. I enjoy good conversations; good food, good music, and good friends.

Bon Appetite everyone…

PS

The modified recipe was yummy, and I made it during the snowstorm on Wednesday with grilled chicken, and one with beef for my nephew. I froze other portions for other snowy days. I felt as if my brother was watching over me as I made the chili.  My mom helped, she showed me how to chop garlic in food processors similar to using a knife, and it’s all about texture. I added a dash of salt to my portion.  I used chicken broth in one and the consistency did change to more a liquid, and it was yummy.

Many nutritional benefits; I took away heavy marbled beef that’s hard to digest. The caloric change was enormous and for me with my dieting that’s important. I also learned to cook, that’s something I am not good at but a necessity to live.  I spent time with my mom, that’s priceless, and we talked about my brother. The chili might have one “golden tear” (Midrash, 13th Century).

I would make it again, and I would re-modify many different recipes for health by eliminating saturated fats, and salt reductions.  The Joy of Cooking has many cool recipes, but many fats, salts, and sugars are excessive in some of the recipes. I can rely on my brothers friends other chefs, and they will help me.  The network is amazing and I cannot think of a better way to honor my brothers memory then to cook.
Bon Appetite.

Apple

Steve Jobs 1955 - 2011

In 2004, I was introduced to Adobe and Mac's G4 Tower.  I learned amazing tricks and what I could do with my photography.  I have not looked back since 2004, and I kept working on my "American Dream" and other aspects of my photography.

My "American Dream," to create a virtual program about my parents Holocaust experience.  I became computer savvy in 1996 when I bought my first HP PC, but never used a Mac. In 2004, I figured out a Mac and Adobe and loved the whole package. I became duality in both products, however; that changed three years ago in 2008, when PC started going hooey.  I still use my tower for lectures for those using PC’s remotely.

I am Apple, and I still use my iPod Generation 3 for the gym.  Apple made it possible for me to create my virtual project because Apple integrated mobile software that changed technology forever. That mobility lead to the Fanny Starr Holocaust projects that interacts with remote locations from around the world.  It’s a phenomenal program, and to create a legacy for my parents is powerful. We can never stop educating on the Holocaust; ignorant people use the atrocity against others as an act of hate.

The links are currents:

The other product I developed in 2008 because of Apple was my blog. Dashboard Messages is very popular with people from all over the world.  I drive and shoot images, and the images become a piece of a story for all to read. I thank you for reading and seeing my stories.

Thank you Steve Jobs for helping me take a plunge and making my "American Dream" a reality.  You will be missed, but never forgotten…

Antisemitism

EDOS

No, Not So...

The Jews I know respect the different religions around our neighborhood, and that includes the Christian Sabbath on Sundays. On Saturday, September 17, 2011, a man stood across the street from EDOS (East Denver Orthodox Synagogue) with a sign.  The sign was a piece of plywood with white paint “shouting, JESUS DIED 4U, JESUS LOVES U, JESUS IS MESSIAH.” He shouted those words and other words “YOU ARE GOING TO HELL,” as people came and left the synagogue on the Jewish Sabbath.

Majority of people coming and going into the synagogue ignored the act of hate. One lady shouted back, “Amen, and Thank You.” The Sabbath a day I respect for both Jews and Christians alike, and going to Synagogue or Church is personal.  It’s a day to connect with G-D and empty a heavy heart, a day to see fellow congregants, and catch up on gossip. The joys of religion, the sad part is the violation of the sacred Sabbath by an Anti-Semite, on the day of rest, but hate never rests or sleeps.

Sunday September 18, 2011, in Lakeland, Florida, a man opened fire in a church filled with parishioners and three people where shot, one is dead, one is in critical condition, and the other has non-life threatening injuries.  The synagogue is lucky that the man standing with the sign did not open fire or storm the synagogue.

All this religious hatred it’s horrible when the world is in need of unity.

9/11

Empire State hrs© 03/28/2002

Journal entry March 28, 2002...

I went back to the hotel the Sheraton hotel on 7th and 53rd Streets, and was numb and sat in silence for a long time. I decided to get some liquor, a small bottle of Crown and coke, but needed to find a liquor store. On the way to Times Square, I saw a New York policeman.

“Yo Mr. Policeman,” Before my question was asked he said,
“No, I was not at “Ground Zero,”
“Okay," but where is there a liquor store?”
He looked at me and hugged me, and said,
“That is the nicest thing anyone has said to me since 9/11.”

He walked me to the liquor store and walked me back to the hotel. That's how intense the emotions where for New Yorkers.

I took the images on March 28, 2002, as homage to my dad's birthday, we visited the Twin Towers together, and I missed my dad. The image is one of 15 and what an emotional photo shoot and are viewable as a slideshow on YouTube.

New York, may peace come to you on the Anniversary Day of September 11, 2001.

Love

LOVE

Tu b’Av, the day of Love, happens on the 15th of Av  (August 15, 2011), a Jewish month in the Hebrew-Jewish calendar. The month of Av, is the eleventh month in the Hebrew-Jewish calendar, fluctuates with the leap year, and occurs between July and August.  Tu b' Av, always falls on a full moon, and starts at sundown on the 14th of Av.

The Israelis and Jews around the world acknowledge the day as the Hebrew-Jewish Valentines Day.  The day happens like any other day, many celebrate with love and all that comes with love.

The images represent Love,

Recently at the Denver Zoo, two giraffes were caught mating. The buck Dikembe and a 1 year old fawn named Possum left the zoo visitors in awe.  Facts; animal mating does not take place behind closed doors, animals do it when they feel the urge. The zoo encourages mating, and many animals do mate for life. The bird species like ducks and flamingo's mate for life, just like us humans.

The holiday is for everyone whether you’re single, dating, or attached, just embrace love, and share the love. Share the love with all kinds of people, the world is need of love, All Is Full Of Love, and remember to love you...

Sending you all love...  Dedicated to my friends who I love…

Freedom Flotilla II

#Stop Flotilla II hrs©
35 years ago on July 4, 1976, my family celebrated Colorado's Centennial, and celebrated the United States of America’s Bicentennial with a group of Holocaust Survivors. We also watched, and waited as The Raid on Entebbe rescue was happening.  We remember the moment when the IDF stormed the airport, freeing the hostages.  The world commented in awe at Israel’s act of heroism. The worlds Jewry stood as one.

35 years later, many Jewish activists, are standing-up against Israel and supporting the Apartheid, and the BDS movement. The BDS movement is behind the Freedom Flotilla II, and Freedom Flotilla II is currently acting restless in Greek waters. They are restless, and have the Audacity to violate, and become terrorist thugs. Now that’s calling the kettle black…  The group supports the Palestinian government that is crooked, and does not supply aid to their own people. The Hamas/Hezbollah, commits acts of anti-Semitism against #Israel and the #Jewish people by kidnapping and killing innocent people. The world is confused with these thugs; the very thugs that use their own people as human shields.

The acts of Semitism are hurtful and when people deny the acts and skirt around the topic that's disgusting.  Most recently in the news, Roger Waters of Pink Floyd committed an act of anti-Semitism. He supports the BDS movement, and he’s trying to punish the Jews. "My conviction is born in the idea that all people deserve basic human rights. My position is not anti-Semitic. This is not an attack on the people of Israel. This is, however, a plea to my colleagues in the music industry, and also to artists in other disciplines, to join this cultural boycott." (RW, JTA 2011). If that is not an act of anti-Semitism then explain; and it’s sending the wrong message.

In December 2011, I Tweeted to Roger Waters, and someone replied, "Give it a break, he's sorry, and he's not anti-Semitic." I replied back, "Read the definition of anti-Semitism."

Who is supporting the movement, Activist, and these activists like Author/Poet Alice Walker?  These Freedom Flotilla II Activist need that time in the spotlight on the backs of innocent people of Palestine as shields for their own private agendas. #Facts.  Ms. Walker is citing with the abused women of Palestine, and is on the ship the Audacity. However, if Ms. Walker was really serious in helping the abused women, she would not need a Flotilla escort..

The Mideast is complicated and when fools on boats stir the rough waters, it does not help the problem.  Why couldn’t aid have been handled through the UN, Egypt, or the Red Cross?

Thank you Greece…  Greece is in the middle of a financial crisis and is helping thwart off disaster by not allowing the Freedom Flotilla II to set sail.

Am Yisrael Chai, I am proud to be a Jewish American, and Happy Fourth of July

Addendum July 10, 2011,
The Freedom Flotilla II failed to sail, the activist started to fly into Israel and where detained at Ben Gurion Airport.  The mission then turned to Flightilla and all the radicals where deported to France, Germany and Switzerland. What's sad, is the people in Palestine did not get supplies promised by the activist, but Israel has been delivering the necessities.

These Freedom Flotilla II Activist need this time in the spotlight on the backs of innocent people of Palestine as shields for their own private agendas.
